1901 Census:   Glebe and Camperdown, NSW

When taking the 1901 Census, the Glebe District in NSW also incorporated Camperdown.     The District was divided into 13 sub-districts, labelled A to M.     These are shown on the rough sketch map below, followed by the description of those boundaries given in the various census collectors' books: State Records NSW: CGS 685.     The microfiche range for NSW seems to be numbers 1007 to 1211.

The collectors' books show the surname and first initial (sometimes a first name) of the householder, and show the number of males and females living in the household (but unfortunately not the names of those others, nor ages or occupations, etc.).     The collectors books for the Glebe District are on microfiche 1158 (sub-districts A and first part of B), 1159 (rest of B and C, D, E & F, and the first part of G) and 1160 (the rest of G, then H, I, J, K, L & M).

Sub-district A:     From a point at the intersection of Broadway and Bay St, along the latter to Wentworth Park along the Park to Cowper St along the latter to Glebe Road, thence to the point of commencement.

Sub-district B:     From a point at the intersection of Glebe Road and Cowper St along the latter to Wentworth Park Road along that Road to Mitchell St along Mitchell St to Wentworth St along Wentworth St to Norton St along Norton St to Glebe Road, thence to the point of commencement.

Sub-district C:     From the intersection of Glebe Road and Norton St along the latter to Wentworth St to Mitchell St, along Mitchell St to Wentworth Park thence a line embracing Wentworth Park to Lyndhurst St and Bridge Road to Glebe Road thence to the point of commencement.

Sub-district D:     From the intersection of Glebe Road and Bridge Rd along the latter and Lyndhurst St to Park Road [Wentworth Park Road?] along Park Road to Blackwattle Bay, by the foreshores of the latter to Ferry Road, along the latter to Glebe Road, along the latter to the point of commencement.

Sub-district E:     From a point at the intersection of Ferry Road and Glebe Road along the former to Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay to Glebe Road - along the latter to point of commencement.

Sub-district F:     From a point at the intersection of Glebe Road and Wigram Road along the former to Glebe Point thence by the shores of Rozelle Bay to open sewer thence along sewer to Balmain Tram Line to Wigram Road - along Wigram Road to point of commencement.

Sub-district G:     From a point at the intersection of Glebe Road and Wigram Road along the latter to Ross St to Parramatta Road along Parramatta Road to the junction with Old Parramatta Road - along Old Parramatta Road [now Arundel St] to Lodge St. along Lodge St to St. John's Road along St. John's Road to Glebe Road, thence to point of commencement.     NOTE:   The descriptions of the boundaries of sub-divisions F, G and I (below) seem to omit a small section of the eastern side of Wigram Road between Ross St and the tram line (odd numbers 115 to 121 Wigram Rd).     This part of Wigram Road (east) was actually canvassed by the collector for sub-division G, notwithstanding the small error in description of the boundary of that sub-district.

Sub-district H:     From a point at the intersection of Glebe Road and Parramatta Road along the former to St. John's Road thence along St. John's Road to Lodge St thence to Old Parramatta Road [now Arundel St] thence to Parramatta Road and along Parramatta Road to point of commencement.

Sub-district I:     From a point at the intersection of Parramatta Road and Ross St along Ross St and Balmain Tram Line to the boundary of the Glebe Municipality [not sure exactlry where this boundary was] - thence by western boundary of Glebe to Orphan School Creek along the latter to Parramatta Road thence to point of commencement.

Sub-district J:     From a point at the intersection of George St Camperdown [later Parramatta Road: Note 1] with Orphan School Creek along the latter to Johnston Creek along the latter to George St Camperdown - along the latter to point of commencement.

Sub-district K:     From a point at the intersection of Newtown Road [now City Road] and Parramatta Road along the former to Bligh St [now Carillon Avenue: Note 2] along Bligh St and southern boundary of Camperdown [not sure exactly where the boundary was] to Church St along Church St to Grose St along Grose St to Missenden Road along Missended Road to Parramatta Road and along Parramatta Road to point of commencement.

Sub-district L:     From a point at the intersection of George St and Missenden Road along the latter to Grose St along the latter to Church St to the southern boundary of Camperdown [again unsure exactly where this boundary was], by that boundary to Australia St along Australia St to George St thence to point of commencement.

Sub-district M:     From a point at the intersection of George St and Australia St Camperdown along the latter to Bishopgate St, along the latter Boundary to Johnston's Creek by Johnston's Creek to George St and thence to point of commencement.
